Book Review: Bad Blood by Demitria Lunetta – Spoiler Free

My Rating: ★★★★☆

Genre(s): Young Adult; Fantasy

Plot: [Copied from Goodreads] All sixteen-year-old Heather MacNair wants is to feel normal, to shed the intense paranoia she’s worn all year like a scratchy sweater. Ever since her compulsion to self-harm came to light, Heather was kept under her doctor’s watchful eye. Her family thinks she’s better—and there’s nothing she wants more than for that to be true. She still can’t believe she’s allowed to spend her summer vacation as she always does: at her aunt’s home in Scotland, where she has lots of happy memories. Far away from all her problems save one: she can’t stop carving the Celtic knot that haunts her dreams into her skin. Good friends and boys with Scottish accents can cure almost anything…except nightmares. Heather can’t stop dreaming about two sisters from centuries ago, twins Prudence and Primrose, who somehow seem tied to her own life. Their presence lurks just beneath the surface of her consciousness, sending ripples through what should be a peaceful summer. The twins might hold the key to putting Heather’s soul at rest…or they could slice her future deeper than any knife.

Pros:

  • It kept me guessing
  • Mental health issues are so important
  • I loved the relationship Heather had with her aunt
  • The dream chapters were really haunting
  • The culture in this book was amazing

Cons:

  • I don’t think faking wellness to leave a mental health facility is something that should ever be suggested to people
  • The romance aspect seemed really forced, like she felt that she had to put it in there because she was writing YA
  • The resolution felt too easy

My Thoughts: I love Demitria Lunetta. So naturally, when I found out she’d written a new book, I rushed out to check it out. I read this is a couple of days, and I’m still not really sure what to think of it. I really loved the cultural aspect of this book, and the fantasy aspect was really well done. But as I mentioned above, a lot of it felt forced or just too easy. I would recommend this book if books about witchcraft are your thing, or if you’re looking for a quick fantasy read.
